We drove to Grosmont today and after parking up we walked through the original George Stephenson (Father of the Railways) tunnel to the engine shed. Philip’s engine (80136) was in the shed having some maintenance.

We spoke to ‘Piglet’ and he arranged for John (one of the volunteers) to take us into the shed so we could get up close to 80136.

The Flying Scotsman was also in the engine shed getting ready for being out on the line next week.

Afterwards we drove to Thornton Le Dale and had lunch in a very nice cafe. We walked along the village street to see Matthewson’s, a vintage car and bike auction place (‘Bangers and Cash’ fame)

We drove back to Pickering and walked up to the castle but Mel’s knee was hurting so we went back to the cottage for a rest.
